Hug-A-Tree provides tips and techniques to young people that will keep them safe, and will help searchers locate them faster in the event that they find themselves lost.. The program was started by the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) after the death of a 9-year-old boy who wandered away from his family’s camp site in the California mountains. This program, taught by trained instructors, provides tips and techniques to young people that will keep them safe, and will help searchers locate them faster in the event that they find themselves lost. There is no charge for ESAR members to provide this training to your youth group. The 30-to-60 minute program includes a short educational video and an interactive discussion and demonstration of the material. Each participant receives a plastic whistle, used for signaling. This program can be a lifesaver for scout groups, youth camps or other groups that spend time exploring the wilderness.
